Music is indeed a beautiful and glorious thing. It can transcend race, gender, culture and even language. It can allow one’s soul to speak and has the intrinsic ability to make someone else understand your pain and joy, so that you might touch someone when all else fails and know that you’re not alone in the world.

On The Subject of Music and Race

Quarrel not at all. – Abraham Lincoln

let’s talk about race…

I mean…, music.

Rap tells a story, of where the singer is coming from, what they have lived thru and experienced, and the feelings they have, along with the circumstances that surround their lives.

Country tells a story, of where the singer is coming from, what they have lived thru and experienced, and the feelings they have, along with the circumstances that surround their lives.

Oh, there is more.

Pop is sugar, usually songs about love or loss or mistakes.   Tells a story: yes.

R&B (urban) is sugar, usually songs about love or loss or mistakes. Tells a story: yes.

Rock is loud but it’s for throwing up a fist and partying in the street.  Rock is to be enjoyed and finally it is expressive, but often, the lyrics are basically “wtf?” are they singing about , and you say this as you laugh.

Hip-hop is loud but it’s for throwing up a fist and partying in the street.  Hip-hop is to be enjoyed and finally it is expressive, but often, the lyrics are basically “wtf?” are they singing about, and you say this as you mimic the dance.

Hard core Rap is basic angry music, not always, but it has more violence and anger speaking of the darker sides of life that we all may not so want to hear. Often times it expresses frustration with situations, people and culture.

(Heavy) Metal is basic angry music, not always, but it has more violence and anger speaking of the darker sides of life that we all may not so want to hear. Often times it expresses frustration with situations, people and culture.

We could go into alternative, jazz, new age, et. al.  But I think you’re getting our point.  Here in america, even our music is separated by race and rage, yet  we’ve managed to develop a culture of similarities even so, holding on to our independence and celebrating our differences.  I would rather think of it as celebrating our differences, instead of any other alternative. So, open up a bit and enjoy music, I mean it’s called pop because it’s popular, not cause we are racially divided.  Last I checked, popular transcends a single culture, it has to pull a little of the people who like country, a little of the people who like new age, and et. al: aka, popular.

Now, let’s talk about …. bling vs goth piercings, and the need to differentiate yourself from your own culture with shiny objects.
