{"id":54,"date":"2008-04-07T10:27:55","date_gmt":"2008-04-07T15:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thestormypresent.com\/ocean\/2008\/04\/07\/on-the-loss-of-the-light\/"},"modified":"2008-04-07T10:31:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-07T15:31:00","slug":"on-the-loss-of-the-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thestormypresent.com\/ocean\/2008\/04\/07\/on-the-loss-of-the-light\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Loss of the Light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <font color=\"#0000ff\"><em>The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation. &#8211; Abraham Lincoln<\/em><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The Olympic torch was extinguished three times on it&#8217;s procession in Paris.(april 6-7)<span>  <\/span>This does not bode well for the games.<span>  <\/span>It was extinguished willingly so it could pass on it&#8217;s own thru protesters.<span>  <\/span>Protesters tried to put it out but were unable to themselves.<span>  <\/span>Since then it was only put out in 2004 <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The Olympic flame has many names but it symbolizes the theft of fire from the Greek god ZEUS by Prometheus who gave it to man; Basically lighting the way for all our discoveries.<!--more--><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">But really, what are the Olympics now? Is it just an extended commercial enterprise?<span>  <\/span>For most countries it&#8217; is their defining moment, just to be invited, to compete is glorious enough.<span>  <\/span><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">To the host country it&#8217;s a way to show off their pageantry.<span>  <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/font><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/o:p><o:p><\/o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Pretty much, ever single place the Olympics has been has experienced an economic boom, about 2-3 years later.<span>  <\/span>After the Olympics the local economy is a wreck as <strike>millions<\/strike> billions of dollars are drained back out.<span>  <\/span>Local Municipalities sometimes collapse; Thou none as absolute as <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Sarajevo<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> that doesn&#8217;t even exist anymore. <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">What does happen is the name is imprinted in the minds of people worldwide and it becomes a place to visit and perhaps live, somewhere they never thought about before.<span>   <\/span>In effect, the Sprit of the Olympics is forever and permanently etched in where ever it is held.<span>  <\/span>Who can&#8217;t remember the names <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Lillehammer<\/st1:city>, <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Munich<\/st1:city>, <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Nagano<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<span>  <\/span>Each name is a hope and a bitter memory recalled.<span>  <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/font><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Let&#8217;s jump back.<span>  <\/span>The torch was put out. There is a symbol to that: a dream died, a world under siege.
